From The Commercial Appeal:

There were smiles, but also tears, as Carter’s family, friends, former classmates and cast members of her hit show “Designing Women” took up most of the 280 seats in the church where Carter returned every Easter and Christmas and during her birthday in May. She donated the chimes that rang through the church during Thursday’s funeral service.

“She just had the joy of life in her,” said Jean Smart, the “Designing Women” co-star as she left what funeral directors called a “committal service” in the graveyard across a narrow road from the church and only a few hundred yards from the childhood home Carter had restored for her frequent visits to a town where she could be herself. From the Action News 5:

Carter’s ‘Designing Women’ co-star Annie Potts couldn’t find words to describe her feelings as she remembered her friend as someone who radiated love on and off the screen. Potts, along with ‘Designing Women’ co-stars Jean Smart and Delta Burke, were among a crowd of hundreds who turned out to pay tribute to the Carroll County, Tennessee native.

“Dixie was very much a lady,” Smart said…

“Her family will remember this person that influenced them with so much energy, joy, and youth,” Smart said. “I’ve told people before she’s the most youthful person I know.”
