Jean Smart, who won two Emmys for her guest role on “Frasier” and a third for “Samantha Who?,” says she worries that a win may lead producers to think, Oh, now she’s probably more expensive.

“That’s not good, but I suppose if someone was not familiar with your work it might not hurt. It might help to say, ‘She won three Emmys,’ ” says Smart, who adds she was only disappointed that she didn’t win for her role as the first lady on “24.” “I will be honest that was like, aw, shucks. I’ll give you one of the ‘Frasiers’ back.’ “

4. Jean Smart (1951- ). Best known as one of TV’s “Designing Women,” Smart has been seen frequently in a wide range of critically acclaimed supporting roles in films like 2004′s “Garden State,” 2002′s “Sweet Home Alabama,” and 2004′s “I Heart Huckabees.” In recent years she’s won two Emmys for guest appearances on “Frasier,” another for her supporting role in the short-lived “Samantha Who?” and was twice nominated for her work as a troubled First Lady on “24.” She can currently be seen occasionally as Hawaii’s Governor in CBS’s re-boot of “Hawaii Five-O.” Everything I’ve ever seen with her in it is automatically better because of it.

… Jean Smart, who played Charlene Frazier Stillfield on the hit TV series “Designing Women,” was also in attendance. Her show received a GLAAD Media Award at the inaugural event in 1991.

“I’ve been a lesbian since before GLAAD was born,” Smart said as she received a warm welcome from the crowd that packed the theater. “On the stage, I was very proud of playing the role of Lil in the New York and Los Angeles production of ‘Last Summer at Bluefish Cove.’ That was in 1980 and ’81 when there almost were no popular gay characters in the media and it really struck a nerve with the audience because they could see there was a real hunger for people to see themselves and their lives reflected in entertainment.”

Smart went on to point out that when “Designing Women” won its GLAAD Media Award for a single episode titled “Suzanne Goes Looking for a Friend” in the category of Outstanding Portrayal of a Gay or Lesbian Character in an Individual Comedy…

Hillsides, the 96-year-old, Pasadena-based center for abused and neglected children, broke all its past records for fund-raising, with net proceeds from its annual gala exceeding $375,000. The elegant black-tie bash held Feb. 28 at the California Club in downtown Los Angeles drew more than 300 guests. “You all are our economic stimulus package,” quipped KNBC-4 weatherman Fritz Coleman, who traditionally handles the live auction chores at this party.

Gala chairwoman Ellen Hatch took her theme, “Tangerine Dreams: A Jazzy Affair,” from Dave Brubeck’s interpretation of “Tangerine,” with the help of Pasadena florist Jacob Maarse, who carried out her motif with lush centerpieces of Tango roses and tangerines laced with kumquat branches. Even the menu had a touch of citrus: a baby lettuce salad of avocado and mandarin oranges; herb-crusted filet mignon accompanied by potato dauphine and a timbale of acorn squash followed by a trio of citrus gelati for dessert.

Along with the Maarse family, attendees included Bishop Jon Bruno and his wife Mary; Bishop Suffragan Chester Talton; the Rev. George Woodward III; Margaret Campbell; Debbe and Otis Booth; Susan and Bill Noce; Susan and Drew Pinsky; Eva M. Casner; Linda and Stephen Gill; Ann and O’Malley Miller; Paul Rusnak; Joan and John McCarthy; and Richard Gilliland and his wife, actress Jean Smart, who sold the necklace right off her back to “sweeten the pot” during the live auction. Christina Applegate is also in the running, given her highly praised work as an amnesiac on Samantha Who?. Plus, as Richmond points out, her recent bout with breast cancer gives her the sympathy factor that has pushed other worthy actors into the win column. Playing Christina Applegate’s manipulative mother Regina Newly on Samantha Who?, Emmy winner Jean Smart consistently delivered her lines with a razor-sharp edge. A classic moment: telling Samantha and her pal Dena (Melissa McCarthy) that making s’mores when they were growing up wasn’t about being maternal. “I only made them so the two of you could have fun together playing with fire while I finished the crossword,” she crowed. About The Women for Obama Rally

The rally featured appearances by guest speakers and performers such as singer Patti LaBelle, actress Jean Smart from “Samantha Who?” and Los Angeles Clipper and UCLA alumnus Baron Davis, among others.

Smart said she supports Obama because he keeps education a high priority and remains consistent in his beliefs, referring back to his speeches made at the 2008 and 2004 Democratic National Conventions.

Smart also criticized Republican John McCain’s vice-presidential running mate, Sarah Palin, for her world views, lack of experience and lack of curiosity.

…But even though the show, which returns Monday (ABC, 9:30 p.m.), skipped out on its higher calling, it managed to deliver something maybe almost as radical for a sitcom: a nuanced and healthily developing mother-daughter relationship. As mom Regina, Jean Smart was luminous and uproarious in equal measure; she earned an Emmy last month for her performance. Regina is needy, manipulative and tragicomic but also invigorated by her second chance at being a good parent. Before Sam’s accident, the two hadn’t spoken for two years; flashback scenes hinted at a tumultuous, unpleasant relationship.
